Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (October, 1987)
Average review score:

Beautiful book ... a must have for Chandler fans.I bought this book a few years ago after happening across it on the internet. What a beautiful book. The selections are well-chosen and the photos are unreal. Buy it. You won't regret it.
Hardboiled, and hard to put down!A goldmine for any fan of Chandler's Marlowe novels and short stories, I couldn't put this book down. It finally gave context to the vistas I had only been able to imagine previously, and I'll never be able to pick up any hard boiled detective story set in Los Angeles without flashing on the images painstakingly chosen to be included in this volume by Ward and Silver. An invaluable asset to any Chandler and noir fan.

Red Dove of Monterey (Bly, Stephen A., Old California, Bk. 1.)
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (June, 1998)

Magnificent!Loved the Spanish flavor of that brief period in the old Californio days before the Gold Rush which is so charmingly presented here. Alena is delightful as the gringo redhead who haunts the hide rancher who tries so hard to stay single in this land of lovers. A great heroine for a fascinating era!
A love at first fight adventure in Old CaliforniaA love at first fight in Old California that Mr. Bly manages to make believable. Another superb read with an excellant heroine. Thanks, Mr. Bly

Remember Me, Irene (Thorndike Large Print Cloak and Dagger Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (September, 1996)
Average review score:

Go Get 'em Irene....Irene Kelly, reporter for the Las Piernas Express, is shocked to discover that a homeless drunk she met at a bus stop a few weeks before, was actually an acquaintance from her past, Lucas Monroe. She had found the encounter unnerving because he had recognized her and kept telling her "I'm not who I used to be." And he was certainly right about that. Twelve years ago, Lucas was her much admired college statistics instructor, a rising star and master's candidate in the sociology department, with a very bright future. Over the past weeks, since their chance meeting, he's cleaned up and stopped drinking and now wants Irene's help with an important personal matter. But before they can meet, Lucas is found dead in an abandoned hotel of an apparent heart attack. As Irene begins to investigate his fall from grace and death, she finds that twelve years ago he was involved with some of Las Piernas' most prominent civic leaders and she soon begins to uncover blackmail, corruption and possibly murder at the highest levels of city government..... Jan Burke is back with another great mystery and this series just keeps getting better and better. Remember Me Irene is a well written page turner, with a suspenseful, plausible plot, witty, irreverent dialogue, compelling scenes and an ending that will take you by surprise. If you are new to the series, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning with Goodnight Irene. For those who are already fans, this latest installment doesn't disappoint.
Top rate suspense novel in the fiction categoryIrene Kelly is definitely one of the best series characters out there today. She's witty, strong-willed, funny, and full of spunk.
She'll make you laugh and cry through every mystery she stumbles upon.
Three cheers for Jan Burke. You really know how to write a page turner.

wonderfulI really liked this book and I plan on voting for Riordan for governor. You should read this book because it tells a lot about Mr. Riordan and California.
great book about Richard RiordanThis is a great introduction to Mr. Riordan, a former 2-term mayor of Los Angeles who is now a candidate for California governor. The author does a good job of introducing bits and pieces about Riordan's life and what he's done for Calif. and what he hopes to do in the future.

Rommelmann's Los Angeles Bar and Nightlife Guide
Published in Paperback by LA Weekly Books (May, 2001)
Average review score:

Original and cool placesEvery Los Angelino I know gives this guide serious praise. Nancy Rommelmann's choices and reviews go beyond the mainstream (though you can take dates, even work meetings). These places are cool, original and the guide lets you know exactly (but with humor and style) what to expect.
Take this to Los Angeles. It's all you need at night.
MAKES ME FEEL RIGHT AT HOME.....VERY INFORMATIVE & IN DEPTH ,,,,AND MORE IMPORTANT IS NOT OVERLY SHOWY OR SELF IMPORTANT....

Rosa Moreno-Hollywood, California, 1928
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Average review score:

Rosa MorenoI loved this book. So now I'm reading more and trying to get my friends to read them to.
A young girl struggles to fufill her dreams.Rosa Moreno grew up in Hollywood, but it wasn't a glamerous life. Since the death of her father, she and her mother have struggled to make ends meet, but the country is in the midst of the Great Depression. Rosa's mother dreams of making her a star, and Rosa doesn't have the heart to tell her mother that she wishes for something different, although she's not sure what yet. But Rosa does manage to discover what it is she wants to be, and determines to live her dream while still making her mother happy. I highly reccomend this novel if you're interested in historical fiction, the early history of movies, or if you're a fan of the American Diaries series.

Royal Tombs of Sipan = Tumbas Reales de Sipan
Published in Hardcover by Univ of California Museum of (September, 1993)
Average review score:

Highly recommended for students of Archeology & PeruMuch is known and published about the Incas of Peru, but, in comparison, little is known about the great Kingdom of the Moches. In the Northwest aired coastal plains of Peru flourished the Moche kingdom between the first and eighth century A.D.
This highly stratified culture, constructed and maintained a vast irrigation canal system, pyramids, places and temples. The Royal Tombs of Sipan was written to serve as a museum catalogue of the finds. The discovery, excavation, and current
interpretation of the three royal tombs recovered from Sipan happened between 1987 and 1990.
This book is wonderful. The beautiful color plates that chronologically lay out this amazing discovery makes the archeological dig at Sipan come alive. Highly recommended for those students of Archeology and those who are interested in the diverse Peruvian Culture.
Wonderful book with many beautiful photos and reconstructs. As an ancient history enthusiast, I found this book to be a fabulous discovery on my part. The oversized format and pull-out recreations are pure joys to the reader. The excellent text, penned by the excavating archaeologist and by the leading authority on Moche iconography, is illustrated with wonderfully detailed photos as well as line drawings of scenes imprinted upon the artifacts themselves. I recommend this volume to anyone interested in pre-Inca history and art, as well as to anyone fascinated by the mystery revolving around the discovery of ancient treasures.

Saddle and Western Gear Catalog, 1938
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (August, 1999)
Average review score:

Ideal for nostaligic browsing and costume referencing.Victor Linoff edits an important coverage: an unabridged reprint of the company's 1938 catalog which will prove a treasure trove of detail for any involved in costuming or representation of the Western wear of the times. From hats to overalls and boots, Saddle and Western Gear Catalog 1938 presents small black and white photos and excellent detail.
Review of Visalia STock Saddle Co Reprint catalog of 1938This is a great reprint of an old catalog. It shows all of what was in the orginal. Saddles, chaps, saddle trees, hats, boots, bits, spurs, and some clothing. This is a great referance book for the person looking to research old equipment that they may have. I would recommend this just for informal reading if you like old west items. It includes prices of items in 1938. This book makes a great addition to your library.

San Diego Architecture from Mission to Modern: Guide to the Buildings, Planning, People, and Spaces That Shape the Region
Published in Paperback by San Diego Architectural Foundation (December, 2002)
Average review score:

Great resourceThis book has been a great find. It is well organized with buildings grouped in sections based on their neighborhood or community location--39 different divisions. Each section provides a building-coded map and a brief but good overview of the area. The biggest plus--a photo for EACH building, unfortunately not always a feature of architectural guidebooks.
A Great guidebookThis is a fine book -- I already took two of the walking tours and it was very enjoyable to see new places in neighborhoods I thought I knew so well. The author really did his homework, and it shows in the introductions to each area--good, clear writing is so rare these days. Plus the color photographs are excellent and there is one for every listing!
